JV sports are often disregarded, playing second fiddle to the more prominent and skilled varsity sports. However, these are Lick’s varsity teams of the future — the minor leagues per se. Last spring, Lick had three JV spring sports: lacrosse, soccer and tennis, but this year it has dropped to two as lacrosse only had enough players for one team.
JV Boys Tennis Team
Until recently, the JV tennis team was practicing on its own without a coach, but then varsity coach Mike Axtell found a fellow pro from the California Club in Pacific Heights. The JV team is now practicing under the tutelage of Matt Mitchell. The team returns last year’s captains Wesley Sparagon ‘11 and Zach Bivins ‘11.
JV Girls Soccer
JV girls soccer starts off the new season with new coach, Randy Barnett, who by day is the disciplinarian of the school as Dean of Students. The team returns most of its starters with only three players moving up to varsity this year. Co-Captain Kelsey Schluetter ‘12 is bothered by the fact that the team is limited to use of only one-fourth of the practice field at City College. However, the outsets for the season “are looking good,” she says.
